Tell me a bit about Kindred & Kind. What's it all about?
Kindred & Kind is a lifestyle brand founded on friendship, pots of tea around the kitchen table and late-night conversations by a camp fire. We met when our eldest children were tiny and discovered a shared love of wilderness walks, picnics, muddy wellies, folk festivals and chaotic gatherings of family and friends.
Kindred & Kind is the product of our combined experience in textile design, floristry and travelling – a reflection of our love of all things natural, beautiful and with a story to tell. We work with a growing community of local artists and independent makers who create a range of seasonal products for our Stables Shop in the courtyard of Renishaw Hall in Derbyshire and our online store. An eclectic mix from flowers to furniture, vintage finds and things we love for home or adventures outdoors.
Tell me more about Renishaw Hall - it sounds a magical place.
Renishaw is really special. The Sitwell family have lived here for over 400 years and it still feels like a much loved home albeit one that has welcomed visitors from the Queen Mother to DH Lawrence and Mick Jagger. Renishaw is probably best known for 'the literary trio' Edith, Osbert and Sacheverell who grew up with the Italianate gardens designed by their father Sir George Sitwell as their playground. Romantic, enchanting and other-worldly, the Hall and gardens inspired painters John Piper and Rex Whistler and there is a rumour that Lady Chatterley was based on Renishaw Hall. We love introducing friends to the gardens especially in spring when the woodlands around the lake are carpeted in bluebells and the camellia walk is in full bloom. Even at the height of summer when visitors arrive in their hundreds, there’s a magical feeling of peace and tranquility. We're also lucky to have access to the old orchard where we have an allotment next to the Victorian greenhouses, vineyard and dairy farm.
Give me a taster of some of the products you sell. Any particular favourites?
We both love vintage ceramics so we always have beautiful jugs and coffee pots by Susie Cooper, Denby and Myott. Our shop reflects the seasons so there will be buckets of fresh flowers and plants by the door throughout the year. Our favourite products include Derbyshire made skin care and jewellery, Sheffield pottery and beard balms, essential oil candles, Sitwell books, independent journals, leather satchels, wool scarves and nature-inspired prints.
