Art editor (freelance, maternity cover)

Ernest Journal is on the look out for an experienced art editor to take on a variety of design work between Feb-Sept 2015. You will be working across the Ernest portfolio, mainly designing the print and iPad editions, but will also support the editorial team with press releases, design for the website and events and various other exciting publishing projects we have planned for this year.

Essential experience and set up

  • An understanding of Ernest Journal
We’re looking for someone who gets Ernest, has an appreciation and understanding of our aesthetic and will join our small team in our unified vision for the brand.

  • An understanding of magazine design and convention
Experience working in a similar role on a consumer or independent magazine is essential. Consistency and a keen attention to detail is also key - you will be used to working with style sheets and keeping grid, fonts, colours, sizes and symbols consistent.

  • Commissioning and editing
You will have experience managing contributors, commissioning art work, writing thorough briefs, managing budgets and deadlines and maintaining correspondence to make sure deadlines are met.
  • Fluent knowledge of Indesign
For our digital editions, we use some of the less-used features of Indesign, so it’s important that you feel comfortable with the software.

  • Experience with Adobe DPS and understanding of iPad app design
Ideally, you have experience using Adobe DPS and publishing digital editions through the App Store - or you’re a quick-learner.

  • Packaging for press
You will have experience flight checking, packaging PDFs and proofing final files and you can spot errors as they arise.

  • Software
Must have either Adobe CC, CS5.5 or CS6 and access to an iPad.

  • Illustration and retouching
Ideally, you will be able to create basic illustrations and do basic image retouching.

Working days can be flexible - we usually need a designer for two weeks per month, with more time near to print deadline. The work is offered on a freelance basis and you will be working from home or your own office. We would prefer to work with someone who lives in or near Bristol, but location wouldn’t be a barrier for the right candidate.

Please email the editor with your CV or a summary of your experience along with examples of your work. Closing date for applications: 1 Feb 2015.
